Kayas Vet Bill
This is my beautiful sweet girl, Kaya Last week Kaya became suddenly ill with pyometra and was rushed straight into surgery. Although she made it through the operation ok, she didn’t start to recover afterwards as she should have done. After having blood tests, I was told she had Stage 4 Kidney failure which had stopped her eating, drinking and peeing. In fact all she was doing was sleeping. She was in the animal hospital on a drip for four days. On day four her veins became so weak that the IV line broke and they couldn’t get another drip into her. The vet asked me

Jessie Holmes back-to-back Iditarod Champion
The 2026 Iditarod felt like one of those years where everything just clicked into place. After the weird route changes and snow issues in recent races, this one went back to the proper northern route from Willow to Nome, and straight away it had that classic feel again. You could tell early on this wasn’t going to be a slow tactical race. The pace was solid right from the interior, and by the time teams started pushing through places like Kaltag and Unalakleet, it was clear we were watching something sharp, controlled, and pretty ruthless from the front runners. Let’s

Harness Your Power: The Husky Approach to Fitness, Focus, and Self-Car
If you’ve ever watched a Siberian Husky bounding across a field, you’ve probably wondered where on earth that level of energy comes from. Their boundless zest, laser-sharp focus when there’s a task at hand, and joyful attitude to exercise is almost enviable. For years, I considered myself far from “husky-like” in attitude; in fact, I found it tough enough just summoning the motivation to fit in movement most days. But when work stress and the general grind started fraying my nerves, I found myself quietly fascinated by how animals, especially the enthusiastic Husky, seemed to move, eat, and live so

One Hundred Winters Book
One Hundred Winters Retracing the Great Race Against Death Written by Jonathan Nathaniel Hayes and illustrated by Caleb Gingras In the dead of an Alaskan winter, Jonathan Nathaniel Hayes set out to retrace one of the most legendary journeys in American history—the 1925 Serum Run to Nome. But this is no reenactment. This is a mission of endurance, memory, and meaning. As Hayes drives his team

Meet The Rookie – Adam Lindenmuth
Adam Lindenmuth began his mushing journey in 2017, stepped into racing by 2019, and officially established his own kennel in 2021 with a clear goal in mind — to raise his own pups and one day run the Iditarod with them. Now that those pups are old enough, that dream is becoming reality. Before he found mushing, Adam had a strong passion for long national scenic trails, having hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and the Arizona Trail. For him, the Iditarod felt like a natural next step in combining endurance, wilderness, and adventure. What is your

Serum Run of 1925
In 1925, Nome, Alaska, faced a sudden and deadly outbreak of diphtheria, particularly affecting the town’s children. Dr. Curtis Welch, the only doctor in Nome, warned that the town would be decimated without the antitoxin needed to treat the disease. Upon checking his supplies, Dr. Welch discovered only one small, expired bottle of antitoxin. Desperate for more, a search revealed a batch in Anchorage, over 1,000 miles away. However, the harsh winter weather made it impossible for planes to fly or boats to navigate the frozen sea. Consequently, it was decided that a relay of dog sled teams would transport

Is a husky right for me?
A husky certainly isn’t the right dog for everyone, so do your homework on the breed ahead of purchasing one. A husky needs to fit in with your lifestyle. Make sure you read up on the breed as much as you can. Reach out to breeders with any questions you may have. There are events throughout the year that you can attend, like Discover Dogs, where you can meet people with many years of experience owning huskies, and they will be happy to answer your questions. Crufts is probably the best event you can go to for information on the

The class involves various activities, including learning in-ring terminology like “stacking” – the correct placement of your dog’s legs to show its conformation. You’ll also be taught the ins and outs of what happens at

Tribute to Lance Mackey
That guy in the big red coat with the huge hood of fur. That guy became my hero on a dog sled, that guy became my inspiration throughout my cancer and that guy over the last few years became my friend and the person I’d turn to when I needed a chat. That guy was Lance Mackey. Lance was a four time Iditarod champion. He was a cancer survivor. He was a dad, husband, son , brother, friend and in my eyes Lance was the greatest dog musher of all time. Lance’s fan base was global. He had such a

Interview with Jeff Deeter
Jeff Deeter ran his first Iditarod in 2008 at the age of 19. He finished in 59th place, with a happy, healthy team of dogs. In the summer of 2010 Jeff met his now-wife, KattiJo. They were co-workers at a dog mushing tour company in southeast Alaska. In 2013 Jeff and KattiJo purchased a piece of land, started their own dog tour company, and began construction on their home. Jeff ran the Iditarod again in 2018, and has run it each year since. His highest finish was 12th place in 2021. Your kennel name, Black Spruce, is quite unusual. Where

Walking Belts and Leads
Walking Belts can very handy when walking one or more huskies. They spread the pull of the lead to your back rather than your arm. This also allows you two free hands. Combined with a good lead, and alaskan semi slip collars, this is the preferred way that we walk our dogs. In this video, Faye shows how a walking belt works and demonstrates walking two of our huskies Angel (grey and white) and Spirit (black and white). The collars, leads and walking belts are available in our store.

Alaskan Semi Slip Collars
Its very important to get the right collar for a sled dog. A normal collar is not good enough to stop the dog from getting free. We only use alaskan semi slip collars. Both for walking and for running in harness. We do not use a walking harness with any of our dogs as these two can be escaped from if the dog decides to back out of it. Alaskan semi-slip collars are the only collar that is 100% husky proof if put on and used properly. The following short video shows how we adjust and wear a collar with

Yukon Quest and Canada Only Route
The Yukon Quest International Association (Canada) is disappointed in the decision of the Yukon Quest International, Ltd., the Quest’s governing body in Alaska, to unilaterally dissolve the ongoing partnership to host the annual Yukon Quest 1,000 Mile International Sled Dog Race. In a press release on May 2, 2022, the Alaskans stated that the two organizations were “unable to agree on significant proposed rules changes applicable to the race beginning in 2023.” The Yukon Board categorically disagrees with that assessment of the situation. The Yukon Quest will continue in the Yukon, with Yukon Quest races scheduled for the upcoming winter.

Iditarod Dog is Found

Long Distance Sled Dog Diet
Every wondered how much water a husky will consume over the period of a long distance race like the Iditarod ? Huskies need a lot of water, and they would consume around 1.5 gallons over the course of a race. That’s the equivalent of you or I drinking 72 glasses of water per day. However, getting a husky to drink this much water, whilst travelling long distances and having to transport it with you, all without it freezing at below freezing temperatures, is a no win situation. There is though a way for the dogs to get their daily allowance

Yukon Quest Becomes Four Races
The Yukon Quest may not be as well known as the Iditarod, but it is regarded as a much tougher race. Whereas the Iditarod route goes along the Yukon River for 100 miles, the Quest trail spans over 400 miles on the Yukon. Both races are typically over 1000 miles each to complete. The Yukon Quest usually goes between Whitehorse in Canada and Fairbanks Alaska, crossing between the two countries somewhere between Dawson City and Eagle. Due to the increase in Covid infections in the area, the 2021 Yukon Quest had to be cancelled, also due to the nature of

Separation Anxiety
Anxiety in dogs is just as it is in us humans. Not at all a nice thing to experience. Although there are different types of anxiety in dogs, the most common is separation anxiety. This is when your dog doesn’t like to be seperated from you. Your dog knows that as his owner you are relied upon for feeding him, playing, taking him for walks. When you are not there to do these things, and you are gone and he is alone, he becomes bored. In sled dogs (huskies in particular) boredom can lead to destruction. A husky is an

Husky Bedding
Any form of foam filled bedding is not a good idea for a sled dog. It wont take long before the bed has been shredded and the filling is everywhere. Most huskies are comfortable just laying on a cold floor most of the time or on your settee / bed if allowed. Buying any bedding for your sled dog is a waste of time and money unless its Vet bedding. Vet bedding is comfortable, easy to wash and durable We buy all our vet bed from Oaks Warren Pet Supplies

Which toys for a husky ?
Because most huskies are known for being destructive, the make of toy they have is very important. Soft or squeaky toys will soon be shredded with ease by a husky. Then you have the danger of your dog getting parts of soft toys, like eyes and noses of teddies stuck in their guts or squeakers from toys stuck in their throats. Huskies are not retrievers so no amount of ball throwing is going to interest him or her. Nylabone are excellent toys for Siberians and Mals, as they are hard and last a lifetime. Puppies need to chew when teething

Walking Harness
Harness – Working not Walking ! One of the most frequently asked questions about huskies is, what type of harness is best for walking them ? People see huskies in harness when pulling sleds or rigs so assume they also need to be walked in one. This is simply not true. Firstly if your husky is wearing a harness he/she will pull more. Hence why they wear harness for working. Secondly with huskies being great escape artists, they can easily wriggle out of many walking harnesses or back out of them. The best way to walk a husky with almost

Training with Joe : Stay Command
We are pleased to be able to bring you a selection of thoughts on training working Malamutes by non other than Joe Henderson, the Malamute Man. The STAY Command In a previous post we discussed the stop command. Now, as I promised you, we’ll talk about the “stay” command. “Stay” is the big one. Very important for various reasons other than behavior and control issues. In fact, without a stay command its not possible for a freight or long distance trail-breaking team to exhibit their true strengths. I’ve explained much of it in my recent book too. Let’s continue: the

Training with Joe : Stop Command
We are pleased to be able to bring you a selection of thoughts on training working Malamutes by non other than Joe Henderson, the Malamute Man. The STOP Command When our dogs hear the command to stop, he or she should think that the only reason in the world that they stop has absolutely nothing to do with sled runner resistance on the snow, deep snow, steep hill or a heavily loaded sled. They stop only because it’s ingrained into their brains’ neural pathways to stop on command. So in other words, if our dogs firmly believe wholeheartedly and through

The August Foundation for Alaska Racing Dogs helps find foster homes for retired sled dogs that have ran in the Iditarod, the Yukon Quest and competitive sprint races. Toilet Training
I’ve always found it much easier to toilet train a female rather than a male. Males are territorial and therefore like to mark their territory, resulting in them cocking their hind leg on most things. I’ve also always found paper training to work quickly and easily. Obviously your pup won’t be able to go for a walk until all vaccines are complete, so taking them out in the garden, is a must for now. A young pup may need to go out every few hours in the night as they can’t hold their bladder until at least three months of

Huskies Off Lead
Can I let my sled dog off lead ? Sled dogs are bred to pull sleds. A northern breed is bred to run and so will do just that. Sadly, the biggest cause of husky deaths are road traffic accidents. Some people think their dog will always come back to them and so continue to let him or her off lead. Sadly the day will come when your dog will bolt and no way are they coming back. They could see a rabbit and chase until lost, or worse. There are a number of reasons the breed take off, some

Sled Dogs and Prey Drive
So many people ask the question, are huskies good with kittens or cats ? Huskies have a natural hunting instinct due to the Inuit people using them as hunting dogs. Therefore it’s in the dogs nature to kill anything small. They see it as prey. A husky has a high prey drive and will instinctively kill any small animal whether it be birds, rabbits or cats. Some people think their dogs are fine with small animals, but I would strongly not recommend it. Huskies lure you into a false sense of security and once they have your trust could suddenly

Brent Sass wins his third Yukon Quest
After breaking trail for much of the last two days, a sweaty but happy Brent Sass won the 1,000-mile Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race on Tuesday afternoon in Whitehorse. It was the third Quest victory and the second in a row for Sass, a 40-year-old from Eureka. “This was a slog, there’s no doubt,” he said at the finish line. “… I’ve run 13 Yukon Quests and broke trail 10 times more (in this one) than in any of the other races put together.” Sass crossed the finish line at 1:51 p.m. AST with 11 dogs in harness and

Huskies Digestive System
Huskies are a breed that have a very delicate digestive system and therefore need to be kept on a strict diet. If you have just brought home a little bundle of fluff and your breeder has advised you to stick to the food your puppy is on, then I would strongly recommend it. Changing your pups food will result in causing an upset tummy. A lot of people do this and then think that the new food has caused the problem. So once again change the pups food until they are then seeking vet advice because they just cant shift

Blowing the Coat
It can be a shock as a first time sled dog owner when your dog starts blowing its coat, or shedding as its known. It is quite normal for this to happen though most people are still fazed by the sight of a moulting husky or malamute. Some people think there’s something wrong with their beloved pet and seek vet advice. Others take more drastic measures by shaving the poor canine. I only wish people would do their home work on the breed before taking the plunge into buying one and that breeders made sure prospective owners know what they

The Artwork of Cameo Anderson
I love husky artwork. But.. I can honestly say I have never seen anything like the illustrations by Cameo Anderson. Her style is unique. Not only can she draw husky fur like no other she also manages to capture the essence of the individual dog. Cameo manages to also cover a vast range of styles. From the unbelievable life like almost photo realistic dog hairs to a cute, graphic style that would look great on tshirts, bags etc. Cameo also manages to melt these two styles into one that meets in the middle and has a great disney-esque feel to

Is this the first ever Siberian Husky ?
An 18,000 year old frozen puppy has been found in Siberia and scientists can’t decide if this is a dog or a wolf. Could this be one of the first ever Siberian Huskies ? Now named Dogor, a local word for friend, it was found near Yakutsk in eastern Siberia. The male’s nose, teeth and fur are in remarkable condition. Many families are not equipped with the skills, experience or knowledge of how to grow food, find water, harness power or deal with the threat of predators. In “Homestead Rescue,” craftsman and survival expert Marty Raney — joined by daughter Misty, a farmer, and son Matt, a hunter and fisherman — attempt to teach these

What Makes Sled Dogs Run ?
Fast, exciting, well trained working sled dog teams are the result of careful behind the scenes planning and hard work. Successful mushers are knowledgeable in such diverse areas as kennel management, canine behaviour, nutrition, veterinary care, psychology, physical conditioning, housing and transportation. Wise mushers soon learn that success or failure in any of these areas affects performance dramatically. Considering this fact it is obvious that the welfare of the dogs is of paramount importance. Team and driver develop a close, trusting relationship because of the amount of time they spend together. To betray that trust by not meeting all of

The Number One Rule of owning a Siberian Husky
Some husky owners think they have their dogs well trained to come back to them when off-lead. It is a sad but true fact that, huskies tend to draw you into a false sense of security until one day instinct will kick in and your beloved friend will be off. Too many huskies end up in road traffic accidents because of this. The Siberian Husky is not a obedient dog and so tends to do whatever they please. They are also great escape artists and will try and means necessary to get out and run whether this be climbing a

The Samoyed AKA The Smiling Sammy
Today, we know the Samoyed as a fluffy canine companion, but the term was originally coined to describe ethnic groups of reindeer herders living in western Siberia in the late 19th century. The herders used dogs to protect their herds from bears and wolves by barking loudly – a trait they’ve still kept to this day! They were also used at times to help reindeer pull the sledges during migratory journeys. TemperamentAccording to the Breed Standard, the Samoyed ‘displays affection to all mankind’. This is true as long as they have plenty of human company. They are not a breed

What shall I feed my husky ?
Siberian Huskies require a comparatively small amount of food for their size. They have a very high metabolism – a little food will usually last them a long way. Their ancestors were trained to travel long distances, pulling a light load, on the smallest amount of food. Huskies are very unlike other dog breeds when it comes to feeding. Breeds like Labradors and Beagles will eat as much as you put in front of them, often to the point of becoming sick. Huskies watch their intake much more carefully: If a Husky is full, they will not eat.If a Husky

Is it ok to feed a raw diet to sled dogs ?
Raw dog food diets are controversial. But the popularity of the diets — which emphasize raw meat, bones, fruits, and vegetables — is rising. Sled dogs have long eaten raw food diets. Extending those feeding practices to the family pet is a more recent idea, proposed in 1993 by Australian veterinarian Ian Billinghurst. He called his feeding suggestions the BARF diet, an acronym that stands for Bones and Raw Food. Billinghurst suggested that adult dogs would thrive on an evolutionary diet based on what canines ate before they became domesticated: Raw, meaty bones and vegetable scraps. Grain-based commercial pet foods,

The escaping Husky
How to keep your husky from escaping is a frightening problem that has plagued many owners. There are two things to consider if you have an escape artist of a dog: why he tries to escape in the first place, and what you can do to stop him. Sled Dogs roam for all kinds of reasons, and in many cases, it will depend on the personality of your individual dog. Here are some of the most common causes. Protecting territoryIf your dog tends to bark or howl whenever neighbours come into their back gardens or strange sounds are heard on the

How to stop your Husky from digging your garden
Does your garden resemble a lunar landscape full of craters? Then you must own a Husky that loves to dig holes. Why do some huskies love to dig as much as they do? Dogs dig to: Find water. If there is no stream nearby then the keen nose of the canine can detect water under the ground. The dogs will dig a hole until they hit ground water. In the cold temperatures they will dig a hole through the ice to get to a water source. Follow the scent of burrowing animals or insects. If there is snow on the

How Healthy are Huskies
Like all breeds there may be some health issues, like hip dysplasia and eye disease in Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes. Some dogs may be faced with these health challenges in their lives, but the majority of Sled Dogs are healthy dogs. Compared to other breeds, they maintain a healthy weight on less food, but you should feed them a high-quality protein-based food. We Huskies are by nature fastidiously clean and free from body odor and parasites. The Northern Breeds are noted as ʺeasy keepersʺ requiring relatively small amounts of food for their size. They were bred to pull a

Iditarod 2017
The 45th running of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race began Saturday with a reminder of the past at the front of the pack. Ryan Redington, the grandson of race co-founder Joe Redington Sr., was the first of 72 mushers to drive a team down Fourth Avenue for the ceremonial start of a 1,000-mile race that will soon move to more remote parts of Alaska. As usual, downtown streets were closed to accommodate hundreds of barking dogs and thousands of adoring fans. Teams took off in two-minute intervals, and most of those waiting for their turn lined up on streets

Learning Fat Burning Secrets from Sled Dogs
With tongue and tail wagging wildly, Larry the lead dog crossed the finish line in March in sunny Nome, Alaska, after running 1,131 miles to win the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race for the third year in a row. To most mortals, Larry looks like a happy but nondescript, scrawny mutt. To sled dog mushers, he is a mini legend that simply needs no introduction. To scientists, Larry may hold the key to a physiological mystery. Specifically, sled dogs seem to flip an internal switch that acutely changes how they burn fat calories, allowing them to keep going and going and

Fat Dogs = Pancreatitis
To understand pancreatitis, it helps to know a few things about this gland whose proper functioning is so essential to life. The pancreas is one of the largest glands in the body. It lies behind the stomach and the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. Because of its long shape it also borders the liver, spleen and kidneys. Its main functions comprise the production of insulin to regulate sugar metabolism, and the production of digestive enzymes. The most important of these enzymes are protease, amylase and lipase, for the digestion of proteins, carbohydrates and fats, respectively. These potent

Symptoms of Hip Dysplasia in Huskies
Canine hip dysplasia is a form of arthritis. The word “dysplasia” means abnormal growth or structure. If your husky has canine hip dysplasia, the leg bone and pelvic (hip) bone don’t fit like a ball into a catcher’s mitt because the cup formed by the pelvic bone is too shallow. The leg bone slides out of the pelvic socket and may dislocate. Painful arthritis can develop in your dog. Dysplasia can occur in one or both of your dog’s hips. Large breed dogs are prone to hip dysplasia, including St. Bernards, German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and Rottweilers. Luckily

TGI Fridays and VR Husky Sledding
A 360-degree virtual reality (VR) experience is set to visit a number of TGI Fridays restaurants this Christmas, as part of the brand’s #JingleEffect campaign. Participants will be transported to Lapland Province, where a sled pulled by 10 huskies will transport them around the snow-capped landscape. The Oculus VR headsets fill users’ entire field of vision, and they track head movements with a gyroscope, orientation sensor and accelerometer. When combined, these features trick the brain into feeling as though the individual has physically entered a new world. In a bid to provide a real-life experience, the content was filmed in
