A five month old husky puppy has been rescued after being left inside a hot car while the owners were shopping at Legacy Place in Dedham, Massachusetts, USA.
Dedham Animal Control said they were alerted after the young dog was spotted inside a parked vehicle at the shopping centre. When officers arrived, the temperature inside the car was reported to be over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which is around 38 degrees Celsius. For a husky puppy, with a thick northern breed coat, that sort of heat can become dangerous very quickly.
The puppy was found on Monday, 18 May 2026, outside Legacy Place, a shopping and dining area in Dedham. According to local reports, the dog’s owners were inside shopping while the puppy remained in the vehicle. Dedham Animal Control later thanked Legacy Place security for stepping in and contacting them, saying that speaking up in situations like this can save an animal’s life.
The case has caused understandable anger online, especially because huskies are built for colder climates and can struggle badly when trapped in a hot, enclosed space. Even on a mild day, the inside of a car can heat up far faster than many people realise. Once the temperature climbs, dogs can become distressed, dehydrated, and at risk of heatstroke.
Dedham Animal Control described the emotional strain of dealing with cases like this, saying that the work can involve both compassion fatigue and deep frustration. They said they would keep fighting for pets who need help, and reminded the public that if they see something worrying, they should report it.
The condition of the puppy after the rescue was not confirmed in the reports, and officials had not said whether any charges would be filed against the owners.
The incident is another warning about the danger of leaving dogs in parked cars. Opening a window slightly or being “only gone for a few minutes” is not enough to keep a dog safe when temperatures rise. For puppies, older dogs, flat faced breeds, thick coated breeds, and dogs with health issues, the risk can be even higher.
Thanks to the quick action of security staff and animal control officers in Dedham, this husky puppy was removed from the vehicle before the situation became even worse.
